# Customer community

**Published:** 2026-09-12 · **Last reviewed:** 2026-09-12 · **Reading edit:** 2026-09-12

One customer has solved a problem another is facing. A community can make that exchange easier, provided people know what belongs in the group and where to get official support. Start with a useful recurring activity and customers who would like to take part.

## Start with a recurring member need

Look for questions customers can usefully answer for each other: operating practices, implementation lessons, or role-specific examples. If every question requires private account access, improve support rather than opening a public discussion space.

## Establish the operating model

1. **Define membership and purpose.** Explain who can join, what the community helps them do, and whether partners or prospects participate. Make commercial involvement visible.
2. **Seed a repeatable activity.** Start with a practical clinic, question exchange, or member demonstration. Invite willing participants personally and obtain permission before sharing their work.
3. **Publish participation boundaries.** Cover conduct, promotion, confidential data, reporting, and moderation. Provide an escalation route for harassment or sensitive incidents.
4. **Separate peer advice from official answers.** Label staff responses and route account-specific support into the support system. Do not let a popular but unsafe workaround become the apparent product recommendation.
5. **Make contribution sustainable.** Recognize useful participation without pressuring customers to become unpaid support staff. Offer different levels of involvement and respect silence or departure.
6. **Review member value.** Inspect answered questions, repeat participation, useful relationships, and member feedback. Track support and retention effects cautiously because active members may already be more engaged customers.

## Worked example

A fictional analytics company runs a monthly reporting clinic. A customer demonstrates an anonymized reconciliation process, while a staff moderator distinguishes general practice from product-specific support.

A participant posts an account screenshot containing customer data. The moderator follows the published removal and escalation process, helps the member share a sanitized example, and improves the posting guidance. The goal is a useful community with workable safeguards, not an empty rulebook.

## Community operating card

| Decision | Definition |
| ----------------------------------------- | ---------- |
| Member need and eligibility | |
| Recurring activity and host | |
| Conduct, privacy, and reporting route | |
| Peer/support boundary | |
| Recognition and contribution expectations | |
| Member-value review and owner | |

## Decide whether to expand

Add formats only when members request them or current activity demonstrates a need. A quiet, useful room can be healthier than a large inactive directory. If staff must manufacture every conversation indefinitely, revisit the purpose before increasing recruitment.

## Try it with your own work

Ask a few willing customers which practical question they would like to discuss with peers. Host one focused exchange and ask whether they would return for another.

The example is fictional; any numbers illustrate the method rather than a benchmark. Adapt the worksheet to your own situation.
