# Self-service buying

**Published:** 2026-09-12 · **Last reviewed:** 2026-09-12 · **Reading edit:** 2026-09-12

A buyer is ready to try or purchase, but the only option is to book a meeting next week. Self-service buying can remove that wait when the product and package are suitable. The buyer still needs clear terms, reliable access, and a person to help when something goes wrong.

## Choose the eligible purchase

Start with a product and package whose requirements, price, and activation can be explained predictably. Route complex procurement, unusual security needs, or unsupported configurations to an appropriate assisted path without hiding that path.

## Design the complete purchase

1. **Expose decision information.** Provide capabilities, limits, integration requirements, pricing units, billing terms, and relevant support policies before checkout. Explain what requires additional setup or payment.
2. **Support evaluation.** Offer an appropriate demonstration, sandbox, trial, or documentation. State trial limits and conversion behavior clearly; avoid surprising the user with charges or inaccessible data.
3. **Collect only necessary purchase details.** Make business identity, billing, and tax-related fields understandable. Use a reputable payment integration and follow its implementation guidance rather than handling sensitive payment details casually.
4. **Provision reliably.** Use the payment provider's authoritative events and recommended server-side checks. Design for duplicate or delayed events and reconcile payment with account access. A browser success page alone is not a robust fulfillment signal.
5. **Explain the next steps.** Confirm the order, access, setup route, support contact, and relevant cancellation or renewal terms. Let users recover from interrupted checkout without paying twice.
6. **Test failure paths.** Cover failed payment, repeated submission, delayed provisioning, plan changes, and support escalation in a test environment. Assign ownership for discrepancies.

## Worked example

A fictional reporting product offers a standard monthly plan for supported data sources. Buyers can inspect the connector list, try a sample workspace, and purchase. A delayed payment confirmation leaves provisioning pending rather than falsely reporting success.

The system processes the authoritative event once, activates the correct plan, and sends confirmation. A reconciliation job flags a paid account without access for investigation. The team measures successful activation as well as completed payment.

## Purchase readiness checklist

| Step | Evidence |
| ----------------------------------------- | -------- |
| Fit, limitations, and price are clear | |
| Evaluation and assisted path work | |
| Checkout and payment handling tested | |
| Provisioning tolerates retries/delays | |
| Confirmation, support, and terms visible | |
| Failure recovery and reconciliation owned | |

## Review the whole funnel

Track evaluation, checkout starts, payment outcomes, activation, support problems, and early retention. A high checkout completion rate can coexist with poor fit or failed onboarding. Use those downstream signals before widening eligibility or increasing acquisition spend.

## Try it with your own work

Walk through evaluation and checkout with a test account. Verify the price and limits, confirmation, product access, and support route. Try an interrupted purchase as well as the successful path.

## Sources and scope

* [Stripe Checkout documentation](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/checkout?ref=b2b-playbook) is one provider-specific starting point. Follow its linked fulfillment guidance for implementation; the business workflow here is original.

The example is fictional; any numbers illustrate the method rather than a benchmark. Adapt the worksheet to your own situation.
